All Beholding Beauty devotionals are written as short, worshipful reflections to help you meditate on God’s Word.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” – Jeremiah 31:3
Everlasting love! Faithfulness! These are perhaps the two most undeserving gifts that we receive from the Lord! The truth is that we are guilty of faithlessness to God and not loving Him supremely, which is what He is worthy of. So if we don’t give to God what He is deserving of, how could He possibly love us and be faithful to us? In a word: grace!
The immeasurable riches of God’s grace (Eph. 2:7) have been lavished onto His children! This means that you and I don’t earn God’s love, and we couldn’t earn God’s love even if we tried. The love of God for you, dear Christian, doesn’t wax and wane according to your performance, love for God, obedience, etc. Your love for God (or lack thereof) doesn’t influence God’s own free choice to love you infinitely second by second!
Guess what: He chose to place His faithful and never-ending love upon you before He even laid the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:3-4)! This love is so strong that the Father was willing to give up His Son on the cross so that you could be brought into the family of God as an adopted child. This was not a cheap transaction!
If you are a parent, could you imagine giving up a child in order to adopt another child who was your enemy at that time (Rom. 5:10)? The Father loves His Son with an eternal, glorious, perfect love! And by sending His Son to redeem His children from the wrath we deserve, we now have peace with God the Father through our union with His Son, Jesus Christ.
This means that by faith in Jesus, we are now loved by God in the same way that the Father loves His Son! It’s an everlasting love that has always been and will always be! It’s a faithful love that cannot waiver due to our unfaithfulness!
Dear Christian, you are to hate and do battle against your sin, but never believe the lie that your sin has affected God’s love for you! You are forgiven of your sin; you are declared to be righteous; you are an adopted child of the Lord God; you are the apple of His eye; you are loved with an everlasting love, and you can count on the faithfulness of God being shown to you forevermore! Praise be to God!
