1–2 Timothy and Titus: Evangelical Biblical Theology Commentary (EBTC)
Kostenberger’s volume is an excellent addition to the wonderful Evangelical Biblical Theology Commentary (EBTC) series. He begins his commentary with an introduction that deals with author and date, historical context, and literary analysis and structure. He then dives into the exposition of the three pastoral epistles. The layout of this volume is really neat and tidy. Kostenberger includes the following sections throughout his work: relation to surrounding context, structure, and bridge.
In 1 Timothy 2:11-12, Kostenberger dealt wonderfully with the topic of women in leadership (the most controversial passage in this commentary). He holds to the complementarian position, and he discusses the issue with gentleness and respect while remaining steadfast in holding to Scripture’s plain meaning.
WHAT IS COMPLEMENTARIANISM? (SEE: Complementarianism for Dummies)
The last section of the book contains the writings on biblical and theological themes. This is 200 pages of biblical theology! Both the commentary alone as well as the biblical theology section alone are worth the price of this book! Kostenberger discusses mission, teaching, the church, the Christian life, the last days, and much more. This is the section of the book that makes this commentary unique from all other commentary series. It is simply excellent!
I can’t recommend this commentary highly enough for its clear teaching, scholarly content, and wonderful biblical theology. Tolle lege, take up and read!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
