A Faith Worth Teaching: The Heidelberg Catechism’s Enduring Heritage
Any confessional, Reformed Christian is going to be interested in what this book has to say. In addition to the wonderful topic (the Heidelberg Catechism), the contributors to this book consist of an all-star team of Reformed theologians! Just a sampling of the contributors: Mark Jones, Daniel Hyde, Cornelis Venema, Michael Horton, Joel Beeke, D. G. Hart, and more.
The book consists of four parts and fourteen total chapters. The four parts are:
- The History and Background of the Heidelberg Catechism
- The Heidelberg Catechism and the Means of Grace
- Christian Doctrine and the Heidelberg Catechism
- The Heidelberg Catechism As Catechetical Tool
I like how part one introduces the reader to the history and people behind the catechism itself. It was also helpful to consider the catechism in the United States specifically. My favorite part of the book was part two which dealt with the means of grace. Sebastian Heck’s chapter on the doctrine of baptism in the Heidelberg Catechism was phenomenal! It touched on the sacraments in general, baptism in particular, and even on the connection between baptism and the Lord’s supper. I also really enjoyed Payne’s chapter on the Lord’s Supper. Payne likewise covered a lot of material in a short amount of space.
This book is filled with theological and pastoral writings that are sure to encourage the reader! These articles are quite scholarly at times, but that is never divorced from experiential, practical living! The balance is just right in my opinion! For that reason, I would gladly commend this book to anybody wanting to grow in their understanding of the Heidelberg Catechism and the glorious biblical truths that it teaches! Tolle lege, take up and read!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
