Christ Our Salvation: Expositions and Proclamations
I love listening to and reading sermons. Actually, I love listening to and reading good sermons!
What makes a sermon good? Well, John Webster knew the answer to that question. In Daniel Bush’s preface to the book, he says this:
“The task of preaching isn’t to entertain; far less is it to draw attention to the preacher. Rather, the preacher’s task is to get out of the way, to let God’s own self-revelation through the written and proclaimed word do the work. And if this is to happen, then the word alone must be primary. Guided by conviction concerning the sufficiency and reliability of Holy Scripture, Webster takes no liberties but simply preaches. He doesn’t speak what is his but speaks only the story of salvation as presented in Scripture.”
Daniel Bush
Webster proclaimed Christ! He proclaimed the Word of Christ, keeping Christ Himself central throughout the sermon. He was concerned about rightly proclaiming the Word of Truth, remaining faithful to the Bible and it’s meaning. This, again, is what makes a good sermon.
In this book, so rightly titled “Christ Our Salvation,” the reader is sure to be stirred up to worship the Triune God! Webster, who was a professor at the University of St. Andrews, knew how to preach Christ to the “normal” Christian. Though he was undoubtedly a brilliant mind, he knew how to preach to the person in the pew. This book will showcase that.
You won’t find a whole lot of philosophy, big words, use of the Greek and Hebrew, or long quotes from Augustine (all of which are good things, by the way). But instead, he simply articulates the Bible and the Gospel of Jesus Christ so that every person, including a child, can understand the sermon. Webster, according to these sermons, is masterful at preaching with the intent of stirring up the people’s affections for Christ, that they would love Him more and seek to worship Him in all of life. For that reason, I greatly enjoyed this book!
There are five parts to the book:
- Sounding Salvation
- Salvation’s God
- Salvation’s Heart
- Salvation’s Virtues
- Proclaiming Salvation
At the back of the book is a Message Delivery Index. This will provide the name of the sermon, the place that it was preached, and the date that it was preached. That’s not a big deal, but I thought it was nice to have that included.
I highly recommend this book to you. There is such a blessing that comes along with sitting down and reading Christ-exalting sermons. Tolle lege, take up and read!
