Come, Lord Jesus: Meditations on the Second Coming of Christ
When I saw this book being advertised, I knew that I needed to read it. For one, I’m not the kind of guy that likes to read books on the end-times. At least not those crazy kinds of books on the end-times that attempt to predict every last detail of every single event. And yet, I knew that I was guilty of not longing for the return of Christ in the way that would glorify God. In other words…I needed this book! John Piper has written a truly wonderful book that is so much more than your typical book on Christ’s return. This book is, first of all, Christian Hedonism applied to Christ’s second coming! In other words, this book is about how God can be most glorified in us through us being most satisfied in Him, and in particular, in His second coming.
Piper looks at 2 Tim. 4:6-8, where Paul says this: “Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.” This book is not primarily about the events of the second coming (although part two certainly touches on details of the time of his appearing). This book is primarily about the Christian loving His appearing! Every chapter in this book exists for this one purpose: that you will love, long for, and treasure the appearing of Christ that is to come!
This book contains 22 chapters and is just shy of 300 pages. It’s the kind of book that I couldn’t wait to read every night! The first part of the book is titled “Reasons to Love Christ’s Appearing.” It was my favorite part of the book as page after page gave me biblical reasons for why I should long for Christ’s appearing. One of my favorite parts of the book was his two chapters on rewards (chapters 10-11). The second part of the book is titled “The Time of His Appearing.” This consists of 5 chapters. Finally, part three is titled “How Then Shall We Live” and is likewise five chapters long.
The bottom line is that Come, Lord Jesus not only answers many questions that you may have about the second coming, but it keeps those questions in their rightful place. In other words, it keeps joy in Christ’s second coming as the primary place, because that is what most glorifies God. I cannot recommend this book by Piper highly enough! Tolle lege, take up and read!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
