Enjoying God
Enjoying God is one of my favorite types of books. It is Bible-saturated and Christ-exalting, and it aims to seriously help the reader to experience the title of the book, which is enjoying God Himself! Chester seeks to help Christians experience the blessing of the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit through our union with the Son, Jesus Christ.
Perhaps another, more concise way of saying it is this: Chester seeks to help the Christian enjoy the infinite blessings of our union with Christ, especially our communion with the Triune God! It is my opinion that Chester has achieved that which he was seeking after.
Layout and Content
The book is fourteen chapters long, coming in at just under 200 pages. After two chapters about joy itself and knowing God (and wanting to know more of God), Chester moves into specific areas of life in which the Christian can experience the joy of the Lord. He discusses pleasure and pain, prayer and temptation, hardship and groaning, the Spirit’s voice and the love of God as well as other topics.
Chester does an amazing job of providing real life examples and helping us to see how it is possible to enjoy God when we may think it is otherwise impossible (if we were honest about it). In this way, he is like both an excellent pastor and a faithful friend. This leads the book to be both very challenging and wonderfully encouraging!
Due to the heavy Scripture usage and the aim of Chester (helping you to enjoy the Lord), this book is sure to make you (yep, you guessed it) rejoice! It will make you happy. If you’re alive in Christ, setting your mind on this topic will surely stir up your affections for the Lord. Again, this is why I love these types of books!
Chester is an excellent author, and this, in my opinion, is one the best books that he has yet to write. He truly helps the Christian to “experience the power and love of God in everyday life”. Who wouldn’t want that? This is indeed a book that you will read very quickly because you won’t be able to put it down. For this reason, tolle lege, Take up and read!

He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
