Ever in Thy Sight: 31 Devotions on the Psalms
As somebody who loves the Psalms and lives in them on a daily basis, this book is a must-have! Abraham Kuyper is known for the application of the Dutch Reformed theology to all areas of life, and these devotional writings on the Psalms will make that richly evident. Imagine sitting across from Kuyper and discussing a Psalm together. As he relates a Psalm to daily life, you can’t help but sit back and ask for him to speak further. This book is like that encounter!
Ever in Thy Sight is a paperback with a very nice design, both the cover and the pages. There is an all black page that separates one devotional from the next. At the top of the page, the reader will find the Psalm reference (i.e. PSALM 41) followed by a portion of that Psalm in grey letters. There is one verse that will be in white letters, and it is that particular verse that the devotional is discussed by Kuyper. It’s nice to have the context of the Psalm, though, as the devotional is easier to understand when the context is kept in mind. The format of this book is very unique and nicely done. I like how the Psalm reference is also written on the side of the page underneath the page number. This, too, is unique.
There are 31 “chapters” or devotionals, and each devotional is around 5-8 pages (some less, some more). The translations are very nicely done by De Jong. These writings by Kuyper are very easy to understand, making this a good book for any Christian, not just those who like to read the Dutch Reformed and the British Puritans.
Kuyper is famous for his saying “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!”, but he has said so much more than just that one quote. I encourage you to spend more time with Kuyper, listening to precisely how he believes the sovereignty of the Lord plays out in daily life. Kuyper deeply loved the Lord, and it’s worth reading his devotional thoughts that come from the glorious, inspired book of Psalms!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
