Gleanings from Paul: The Prayers of the Apostle Paul
I have read many books on prayer, and this one is near (or maybe at) the top of my list! Instead of talking much about what prayer is and how to approach it, Pink takes the reader directly to the Bible to show us how to pray. In 33 chapters and almost 500 pages, Pink looks at 33 prayers of the Apostle Paul and shows the reader how to approach prayer in a truly God-honoring manner. But, since Paul’s prayers are typically found in the context of his instruction to specific churches, this book is also about Paul himself, the God that he served, and churches that he ministered to. Therefore, Pink’s book on the prayers of the Apostle Paul is a very unique work that is edifying to the reader.
Here are a few of the chapters in this book:
- Prayer and Praise (Romans 1:8-12)
- Prayer in Hope (Romans 15:13)
- Prayer for Weaker Brothers (1 Cor. 1:4-7)
- Prayer of Gratitude (Eph. 1:3)
- Prayer for Fruits of Righteousness (Philpiians 1:11)
- Prayer for Joy and Thankfulness (Col. 1:11-12)
- Prayer for Love Toward God (2 Thess. 3:5)
As you can see in just this small sample, the topics that are covered are exciting and sure to challenge and encourage the reader! Pink is a phenomenal Bible teacher who is passionate about the glorious truths in the Bible and our communion with the God of the Bible. His writing style is very easy to understand, and he is masterful at guiding the reader into applying the wonderful truths that he is expounding upon.
I hope that many Christians will take advantage of excellent books such as this! It is these types of works that are sure to help Christians grow in their understanding of God’s Word, and in this case, prayer specifically. I highly recommend this book as one that is sure to assist the Christian in achieving a richer prayer life.
Tolle lege, take up and read!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
