Gospel-Centered Family Counseling: An Equipping Guide for Pastors and Counselors
Part one of the book provides the biblical foundation for families. The second and third chapters are specifically on parenting by God’s design. This is an excellent section that is essential to the rest of the book.
Part two of the book helps the reader to develop 22 relational competencies that can be divided into three main topics:
- Infusing Hope
- Parakeletic Biblical Family Counseling for Suffering Families
- Nouthetic Biblical Family Counseling for Sinning Families
Kellemen uses the “Sustaining, Healing, Reconciling, and Guiding” paradigm that he uses in most of his other counseling books.
This book is super helpful for the counselor! Not only is the main material very instructive, but there are many figures in this book that are likewise valuable. There are “Maturing as a Biblical Family Counselor” sections that are practical and interactive. These sections are all over the book, and they are definitely worth spending time in.
There are many excellent books out there on biblical counseling, but this is the type of book that will be cherished by those involved in the task of biblical counseling. It is truly a book for anybody interested in helping to minister God’s Word to struggling families. I hope that many will learn from Dr. Kellemen’s wonderful work. I highly recommend this!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
