In Season and Out: Sermons for the Christian Year
In Season and Out: Sermons for the Christian Year is an excellent collection of sermons that can read for either devotional purposes or sermon preparation. It would be very useful for Sabbath day reading. One could profitably read the sermon that aligns with that particular Sunday.
Here are the order of the sermons:
- Advent (3)
- Christmas (1)
- Baptism of Our Lord (1)
- Transfiguration (1)
- Lent (2)
- Palm Sunday (1)
- Maundy Thursday (1)
- Easter (1)
- Ascension (1)
- Pentecost (4)
- Trinity Sunday (1)
- World Communion Sunday (1)
- All Saints (1)
- Christ the King (1)
- Additionally, there are 9 sermons that are under the heading of “sermons for ordinary time.”
DESilva is clearly an able pastor who knows how to handle the Word of God. His sermons are heavily centered on the Triune God and the work of redemption that is brought about by the sending of Jesus Christ, His perfect life, death, resurrection, and ascension, and applied to the church by the person of the Holy Spirit.
DESilva does a wonderful job of proclaiming biblical truth and also helping others to rightly apply that truth to our lives. He also does a great job of connecting the particular church season to each sermon. There are many good illustrations given that help the passages to be better understood, and they could also be good illustrations for pastors to utilize in their preaching of the Word (just do your duty of citing DESilva).
This book provides a great sampling of liturgical preaching. Perhaps some accustomed to the practice of expository preaching will notice some similarities and differences between that and liturgical sermons. DESilva certainly seeks to exposit the passages for that particular Sunday, but it has some differences with the verse-by-verse variety of expository preaching. As mentioned above, there is no doubt that Christ is preached, and preached well.
I found this book to be a wonderful collection of sermons that stir up the heart to love God and others more and more. For that reason, I strongly recommend this book for followers of Christ to dig in and enjoy. I believe you will profit much from the wise, loving, Christ-centered preaching of this servant of Christ.

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
