None Else: 31 Meditations on God’s Character and Attributes
This little book is an excellent resource for growth in knowledge and love for the Triune God! I absolutely love the format of this book, and I think it will prove to be exceptionally useful to the average reader.
Format and Content
There are 31 devotions, each one being a chapter. Each chapter focuses on a specific attribute (or manifold perfection) of God. All of the chapters begin with a scripture meditation followed by a beautifully written prayer.
There is then a “Biblical Perspective” section that examines the entirety of Holy Scripture and provides a worshipful teaching on the attribute being discussed. This section also touches on historical and theological background to the attributes. Next, there are reflection questions to work through and apply.
Finally, there is a “Digging Deeper” section that is extremely beneficial. This section provides more Scripture passages to study on the chapter’s topic. It includes some further biblical teaching and theological thoughts as well as quotations and further resources.
Purpose of the Book
This book was written to help the reader reflect on the glorious attributes of God as a means of transforming hearts and minds. The purpose of the prayers, teachings, and probing questions is to see the reader transformed into the image of Christ! I would say that Beeke and Cosby have successfully reached what they were aiming for.
I found None Else to be incredibly helpful in understanding who our great God is, and it surely stirred up my heart to worship! The book is written in a very accessible manner, and I’m sure that Christians of varying degrees of maturity will find it understandable and encouraging.
Study God’s Character in 10 Minutes a Day
Each chapter is 5-6 pages long, and considering the small stature of the book, that makes for less than 5 minutes of reading per chapter. If you take the time to answer questions and spend time meditating and praying about what you’ve read, one could realistically spend 10-20 minutes a day with the book in order to really benefit from it. I personally found that extremely doable, and I’m sure others will as well.
Conclusion
I couldn’t possibly recommend this book highly enough! The material is excellent (again, written in a very understanding way that is sure to stir up your affections for the Lord), the format is well-done, and I’m confident that many will be changed as a result of setting the mind upon the glorious attributes of God!
Tolle lege, take up and read.

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
