Pages from a Preacher’s Notebook: Wisdom and Prayers from the Pen of John Stott
This book is an absolute treasure trove! Let me state from the beginning that this book is a must-have if you are a preacher, teacher, or serious Bible student. Pages from a Preacher’s Notebook is a collection of hundreds of notes on many different topics and prayers that have come straight from the pen of one of the greatest Christian figures in the 20th century! Mark Meynell served alongside John Stott at All Souls Langham Place in London, and he has taken these preaching notes and prayers and arranged them topically for us to benefit from.
This book is a tremendous resource for the church! The content is simply amazing, and the arrangement of the material is very helpful to the reader.
Meynell has broken the book into four main sections:
- God and Gospel
- Church and Christian
- World and Worldviews
- Prayers
The book is nearly 300 pages of notes about 78 different subjects and 35 prayers of various topics. Most of these notes are useful for personal application and for preaching illustrations. They are also useful in that they give the reader a glimpse into the mind of a tremendous man of God who excelled at preaching the Word of God. For all of these reasons and more, this book is a great resource for today.
Apart from the excellent content, I also liked the pictures of Stott’s actual notes that are sprinkled throughout the book. I’m glad that these were included.
Books like this are a wonderful encouragement from a great pastor who has gone before us. Stott went to be at home with the Lord in 2011, and it’s great to see this book being published just years after his death. I highly recommend this to you.
Tolle lege, take up and read!

Reviews of Commentaries by Lexham Press:
Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
