Psalm 119 For Life: Living Today in the Light of the Word
Psalm 119 For Life: Living Today in the Light of the Word is written by Hywel R. Jones and published by Evangelical Press (EP). Jones is the Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Seminary California, and it was there that he first gave these devotional addresses in chapel services. There’s only one thing that could be better than reading this book by Jones, and that would be hearing him in person deliver messages in regards to “The Great Psalm”! Most of us are left with the former, and with that we can still be very grateful.
This book consists of 23 chapters and 173 pages. Though it is a short book, it should not be read quickly. Instead, it ought to be read slowly and with a meditative approach. Allow the very words of Psalm 119 to be hidden in your heart, and listen in to the excellent teaching of Jones as he exposits the great truths contained in the Great Psalm.
I really appreciate the format of this book. In Psalm 119, there is an alphabetical structure in which each stanza begins with a Hebrew consonant, beginning with aleph and ending with tav. There are eight verses in each stanza, so each chapter in this book is a teaching on eight verses, all of the way through 176 total verses. The chapters are relatively short, but they are dense! You get the feeling as you read through this book that Jones has been studying Psalm 119 for a very long time, perhaps for a good portion of his life. There is so much wisdom to be found in these pages. Jones is concise and yet very thorough!
I think that this book is well suited for all types of followers of Christ. Professors and pastors will greatly benefit from the devotional and informative nature of the book (after all, it was originally addressed to them along with seminary students), but also laymen will be able to understand and comprehend the magnificent teaching that Jones offers to us as it is very easy to understand.
I want to highly recommend this great book to you! It is sure to stir you up to greater worship of the Triune God. I am thankful for this superb treatment on Psalm 119 by Hywel Jones.

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
