R.C. Sproul: A Life
I am so pleased that Dr. Nichols wrote this book for two reasons. One, because he spent so much time with Dr. Sproul personally. He’s the right guy for the job. But two, Nichols is such an incredible writer! I feel like I can read his books in one sitting because of the way they flow so nicely.
It’s hard to know how to review a biography without simply saying that you need to read this book! But I will say this: R. C. Sproul is my personal theological hero. I am a Reformed pastor because of him, and even more so, I am a Presbyterian because of him. It was his argumentation for paedobaptism that led me out of a credobaptist denomination into a conservative, Reformed Presbyterian denomination. It seems as if he has taught me most of what I know because of the hundreds (maybe thousands?) of hours that I’ve listened to his lectures and preaching. He has impacted me greatly. But you know what is really neat? I’m only one of thousands of people who say that. Dr. Sproul has impacted so many people by his uncanny ability to teach difficult doctrines in ways that children can understand. He was the master of articulating theology in a way that anybody could grasp it.
This biography walks through the life of Dr. Sproul and witnesses to the ways that the Lord has mightily used this man of God. Nichols discusses his early life in Pittsburgh, meeting Vesta, beginning Ligonier, his involvement with the ICBI, his views on apologetics (a hot topic in Reformed circles), and much more. I promise you that you won’t be able to put this book down. It’s over 300 pages, and yet you’ll breeze through it in no time. You’ll be encouraged and challenged as you journey through the life of a man that was dedicated to the holiness of God. I can’t recommend this highly enough. Tolle lege, take up and read!

He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
