Romans For You
As Carl Laverton (the “God’s Word For You” series editor) mentions in the preface, the aim of the series is to be Bible-centered, Christ-glorifying, relevantly applied, and easily readable. Each volume is written in such a way so that the reader may read, feed, and and/or lead. In other words, Romans For You could be read from cover to cover, or as a daily devotional, or as a resource that assists in preparation to lead others through the study of God’s Word.
These are not commentaries dealing with original languages or interacting with historical and recent scholarship. However, they are very similar to commentaries in that they are verse-by-verse expository guides to books of the Bible. Though not intended to be exhaustive in their interaction with the text, they are nevertheless quite thorough in their treatment of each verse.
Keller absolutely hits a home run with this series on Romans! The 16 chapters that make up the book of Romans contain no small amount of majestic teaching. Romans teaches on important topics such as the nature of God (and His righteousness specifically), mankind and their sinfulness, justification by faith alone, the Christian life in dealing with sin, the Holy Spirit, election, Israel and the church, civil authority, Christian liberty issues, and more. In other words, there is a lot to cover in this wonderful book of the Bible!
And yet Keller so humbly, wisely, and pastorally (and I don’t use that term loosely; Keller teaches the Bible with the warmth of a shepherd caring for his sheep) works verse by verse through this glorious book. I would recommend this book for that reason alone!
Another important aspect of this series of books written by Keller that I want to point out is how Keller approaches the difficult topics found in Romans. Whether it be election or homosexuality, Keller is very thorough in his treatment, and yet quite concise. He says a lot with few words! This is again where Keller’s wisdom shines forth. He does an amazing job of expositing the text in a very clear and understandable manner. He doesn’t stop there, though. He also helps the reader to apply the teaching to life. This is also where the questions at the end of the chapter are rather helpful.
I absolutely love this set of books by Keller! These are only the second (and third) volumes that I’ve read in the “God’s Word For You” series, and I have found them to be excellent guides to better understanding God’s Word, and to better applying that Word to my life. For this reason, I can’t recommend these books on Romans enough! Buy them both, and be amazed at God’s Word and the glorious Christ that they are about! Take up and read.
