Romans (Geneva Series of Commentaries)
First of all, the physical book is beautiful. I love Banner books (they are always very aesthetically pleasing to me!) and this volume, along with all the others, is a beautiful hardcover book. The hardcover is a crimson-like color with gold lettering on the spine. The dust cover is white with a red banner (again, like all other volumes in this series), and this specific cover has a picture of Promenade St. Antoine, the place in Geneva where Haldane preached through the book of Romans. The back cover lists all of the other volumes that are available in the Geneva Series.
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones provided the foreword to this book (which is awesome!). Following that is an excellent preface and introduction to the book of Romans. The preface itself is worth the price of the book! That’s how good Haldane is with words. After reading that preface, one will surely be ready to study the Word of God with the goal of loving obedience and worship. Like a good preacher, he gets the reader amped up to dive into the riches of God’s Word!
Haldane is an absolute blessing to the church! He knows how to rightly handle the Word of God, and he proves to be not only a competent exegete of the Word, but likewise a pastor and preacher. He not only tells the reader what the Bible says, but he helps them to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only. I can only imagine what it must have been like to hear Haldane preach through this glorious book of the Bible!
Romans is Paul’s magnum opus, his most exhaustive treatment of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Haldane helps the reader to navigate through the glorious topic of justification by faith alone in chapters 1-5. The reader will not be disappointed by Haldane’s treatment. In the same way, you will be greatly blessed by reading through “the greatest chapter in the Bible,” Romans 8. Bask in the glories of the Gospel as you read through, verse by verse, Paul’s discussion on the Christian life with the Holy Spirit.
This volume has very, very little footnotes. Haldane rarely uses them, leaving most of the content in the main body of the text. However, with that being said, Haldance does not get overly-technical in the main body, so have no fear of being unable to understand this commentary. Like all of the Geneva Commentaries, it is a great resource for both the pastor and the lay person!
Haldane works through many incredibly important doctrines in this letter (i.e. justification by faith, sin, law, Israel, election, the Holy Spirit, Christian liberty, and much more). Due to his phenomenal teaching ability and his clear and articulate writing style, I highly recommended it to you.
Tolle Lege, take up and read!
