Sermons on Ephesians
Most people who are familiar with John Calvin are aware of his impressive commentaries and his majestic Institutes of the Christian Religion. However, very few are aware of the fact that many of his sermons have likewise been translated and published in the English language. And for those who are familiar with these sermons, they often assume they are nothing more than a regurgitation of his commentaries. However, nothing could be further from the truth! These sermons were preached to his people in Geneva when he was 49 years old, and they are, in the words of Charles Spurgeon, “priceless”.
These sermons are, in typical Calvin fashion, dense! But they are extremely readable, clear, understandable, and devotional. Just listen to the conclusion of his sermon on Eph. 4:11-12:
“Now let us fall down before the majesty of our good God with acknowledgment of our faults, praying him to make us so to feel them that we may be cast down in ourselves and seek nothing else but to be set up again by him, and that our Lord Jesus Christ may have such preeminence over us that we may honor him as he deserves, that we being under him and in his keeping may be so guided by his Holy Spirit that his word may profit more and more in us, and show forth his strength. And may he so bear with our infirmities that he may never cease to take us for his own, so long as we live in this world, and so we are all gathered up together to his kingdom. That it may please him to grant this grace, not only to us, but also to peoples.”
That gives you just a glimpse of what you find on page after page of these sermons. They are good for the soul, and will surely help the reader to draw close to the Lord!
I highly recommend this book of 48 sermons to you! Tolle lege, take up and read!

He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
