That Hideous Strength: A Deeper Look at How the West Was Lost
Perhaps the title of this book provides a good deal of information to you already. If it doesn’t, let me provide you with the subtitle at this point: An Expanded Edition Examining the Cancer of Cultural Marxism in the Church, the World and the Gospel of Change. There you have it! That is what this book is all about.
Joking aside now, any observant Christian is able to notice that our culture here in the West, and especially the Gospel of Jesus Christ here in the West, is under attack by this “cancer of cultural Marxism.” Some have actively bought into this (often leading to theological liberalism) and others have ignored it (evangelical piety, as Tinker calls it). Both approaches are wrong and dangerous, and this book is a clarion call to open our eyes up to what is happening all around us.
Tinker’s goal is to provide a Gospel response to what is happening in our times. His goal is to use C.S. Lewis’s book That Hideous Strength in addition to Genesis 11 and the Tower of Babel to help the church in that endeavor of responding with the Gospel.
This book is eye opening, convicting, and extremely insightful! It’s a short book (under 200 pages) and it reads very quickly like a great novel that you can’t put down. The church absolutely needs this book today! I gladly commend it to you.

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
