This book consists of eleven essays that are all written in honor of Donald S. Whitney, author of well-known Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. This is a “celebration writing”, a “festschrift” for Donald Whitney. The contributors that Delaney and Duke assembled is top-notch! The authors include Stephen Yuille, Tom Nettles, Michael Haykin, Albert Mohler, Joel Beeke, Steven Lawson, and more. All of these essays were written specifically with the honor of Whitney in mind.
What you will find in The Spirit of Holiness is sure to encourage your soul and stir you up to worship and holiness. There are reflections on spirituality that are shaped by God’s Word. This is, of course, the best part of the book!
I also greatly appreciate the focus on church history. The Puritans, Edwards, Fuller, and Spurgeon (and more) are all over this book! This you will find in the first part of the book. The second part of the book deals with some specific issues, such as providence, the local church, sanctification, and more. These subjects are wonderfully connected to real life and how one can grow in holiness as a result of them. Though all of these essays are certainly in some way connected, they all have their own little topic that they are addressing, and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book.
If you’re looking for a book that is focused on the spiritual disciplines of the Christian life, and you want to learn from some of the great pastors/theologians of our own day, then look no further. You will delight in this book! Tolle lege, take up and read!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
