The Way of Life: Christian Belief and Experience is written by Charles Hodge and published by Banner of Truth. This is a small book that packs a huge punch! It’s considered a Christian classic by many, and it’s known as Hodge’s masterpiece (even more so than his phenomenal multivolume systematic theology).

The Way of Life: Christian Belief and Experience
The Way of Life consists of nine chapters that deal with the way of salvation. Truly, every one of these chapters is in itself worth the price of the book! This book ought to be read by non-believers, seekers, baby Christians, struggling Christians, mature Christians, etc. This book will benefit everybody essentially!
As the book mentions:
Hodge here brings an understanding down to the capacity of every reader and writes in a simple, fresh, experimental style which demands attention. His concern is practical and evangelistic throughout and at every point he aims to convict unbelievers, to instruct the awakened, or to confirm the Christian.
That nicely sums up every single chapter. Hodge is a brilliant theologian, and he is able to articulate gospel truth in such a simple and yet profound way in this book.
I normally like to pick a chapter or two that I especially liked and provide a few comments on it. However, I loved every single chapter in this book. I cannot say enough good about them. I will say this: the chapters on Holy Scripture being the Word of God (chapter one), Justification, and Holy living are phenomenal. You will be encouraged, and you will have your affections stirred up for the Lord.
Hodge is a master teacher, and this comes through especially as he teaches on justification. He is very precise and careful with his words. He also isn’t talking about mere concepts or something that is abstract, but he helps the reader to see the importance of these things for daily life before the face of God. Hodge also includes chapters on topics related to sin, faith, repentance, and profession of religion.
This book comes in at 276 pages, but the book’s physical dimensions are rather small, so it’s a fast read. I think that every Christian, again, will benefit greatly from this book. I can’t recommend it highly enough, and I hope that many will take advantage of publishers like Banner of Truth who exist to get excellent books like this into the hands of Christ’s followers.
Tolle lege, take up and read!

Matt became a joyful follower of Jesus at the age of 21. He is very grateful to be a husband to Lindsey, and a father to four boys. He is an ordained minister (teaching elder) in the PCA. He previously served as a pastor of biblical counseling and is currently a corporate chaplain in southern Delaware. Matt received his Master of Divinity degree in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds an advanced certification in biblical counseling from the Association of Biblical Counselors. In his free time, he loves playing with his boys, traveling with his wife, and reading (and buying!) books.
